Check Ups & Cleanings
Regular dental cleanings are an important part of good dental health. A dental cleaning typically includes the following procedures:
Removal Of Tartar & Plaque
A dental cleaning, sometimes referred to as a prophylaxis, or prophy, includes scaling to remove plaque, calculus and stain from the visible portion of teeth. At Mantra Dental, EK Dental and PLD Dental, our dental hygiene team will take great care to ensure your safety by using strict sterilization controls, educating you on your particular oral concerns and providing you with instruction as needed to keep your mouth healthy. Dental cleanings help prevent gum (periodontal) disease, a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums and surrounding tissue caused by plaque (bacteria). If plaque isn’t removed each day by brushing and flossing, it hardens into a rough, porous substance called calculus (also known as tartar).

Periodontal Check-Up
Toxins produced and released by bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. These toxins cause the breakdown of the fibers that hold the gums tightly to the teeth, creating periodontal pockets that fill with even more toxins and bacteria. As the disease progresses, pockets extend deeper and the bacteria move down until the bone that holds the tooth in place is destroyed. The tooth eventually will fall out or require extraction.
In addition to your cleaning, the hygienist or one of our dentists (Dr. Shawn or Shiva Monga) may:
- Examine diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
- Perform an oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
- Evaluate your gum disease status: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
- Examine tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
- Examine existing dental restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
